Learn about British and American culture broadly and deeply while striving to acquire advanced English skills
We offer a systematic and diverse English curriculum and practical English instruction in small classes. At the same time, all students take seminars to learn about the culture and history of English-speaking countries, including the United States and the UK, in a specialized and cross-disciplinary manner, and acquire the ability to communicate at a high level in a global society.
Department of British and American Studies Curriculum
Course Overview
*Students are divided into courses from the second year onwards. Regardless of which course they belong to, they can take all lectures and seminars offered by the department.
English and English Education Courses
This program studies English and other foreign languages from the perspectives of linguistics and English language education. Research topics are diverse, including aspects of language, intercultural communication, applied linguistics, and English language education.
Literature, Arts and Media Course
Students will study literature, art, and media from the United States, the United Kingdom, and other English-speaking countries. They will come into contact with specific works in the field they wish to research, such as novels, paintings, and films, and deepen their understanding.
History, Society and Philosophy Course
Students will study the societies and cultures of English-speaking countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, from a variety of perspectives, ranging from people's lives to history, thought, and religion.
Cultural Exchange and Tourism Course
This course focuses on English-speaking countries and offers practical courses in tourism and cultural exchange, and covers a wide range of topics. Lectures and seminars are offered in English, and students study English-speaking culture from a global perspective.
English Intensive Class
Starting in 2022, we will be introducing an intensive English class. This is a special, selectable class within the department where students can acquire more advanced English skills in small groups. Some Specialized Courses, such as the basic seminar and second-year seminar, will also have dedicated classes for this class.
