Class Introduction
East Asian Chinese Character Culture Seminar
After originating in China, Chinese characters spread to neighboring countries such as Vietnam, the Korean Peninsula, and Japan, forming a Chinese character cultural sphere. In this class, we will study Chinese characters from a wide range of perspectives, including their origin and development, their principles and functions, the Chinese character reform in Japan and China, and the expression of Chinese poetry in medieval Gozan literature.

Festivals and annual events are passed down throughout Japan, and behind them are folk beliefs. In this class, we will explore the origins of annual events, relying on the perspectives and methods of Kunio Yanagita and Shinobu Orikuchi. We will also write about travel and observations in Japan and overseas on the theme of festivals and annual events.
history of chinese thought
The ethical ideas of Confucius, created by Confucius and developed by Mencius, Xunzi and others, became the state religion of successive Chinese dynasties and regulated human relationships and social order for over two thousand years. We will consider from various angles what kind of ethics they sought and whether it can be said that the ethical ideas of Confucianism brought happiness to everyone.
Japanese Folk History
This course will provide an overview of Japanese folklore, while considering the characteristics of the production activities and spaces of agriculture, fishing, forestry, and hunting. It will also consider one's own relationship with folklore and its relationship with modern society.
Islamic Culture Seminar
Students will explore Islam from various angles, such as food culture, customs, and the pilgrimage to Mecca, through thematic reports and reading materials. Presentation skills will be developed through presentations and discussions, and students will also improve their reading comprehension skills necessary to utilize Japanese and foreign language materials.
History of Japanese clothing culture
We will clarify the uniqueness of clothing in each era, focusing on kosode, the ancestor of the modern kimono. We will also consider the evolution of design, focusing on Yuzen dyeing.
Japanese performing arts history
We will introduce traditional Japanese performing arts such as Kabuki, Noh, and Bugaku in relation to the times and society, and reconstruct the progress of Japanese history from the perspective of performing arts.
Chinese history
This course will approach the driving forces behind traditional Chinese society from a variety of perspectives, including traditional culture such as martial arts and the interconnectedness of the East Asian world.
Japanese Classical Literature
Two new courses, "Ancient and Middle Ages" and "Medieval and Early Modern Periods," will be offered from 2022. Students will learn about the culture and historical background of the time, and aim to gain a deeper understanding of classical literature through comparisons with other regions in East Asia.
Contemporary Korea
We will introduce and explain various cultural phenomena found in contemporary Korean society, and consider together the dynamics of people's dynamically changing lifestyles.
Japanese Language and Culture
This course covers a wide range of issues related to the Japanese language in this age of globalization and information technology, and builds the foundation for acquiring a specialist perspective on the Japanese language and improving one's ability to use it.
Islamic Cultural Studies
Students will learn basic knowledge about Islam, which is essential when considering the international community, and will also consider the historical development of West Asian and Central Asian societies.
Japanese Medieval History
This course will focus on the characteristics of medieval society from the 11th to 16th centuries in the Japanese archipelago, focusing on the movement of people and goods between Kyoto, the political, economic and cultural center, and the provinces. In the first half of the course, the course will focus on samurai, and in the second half, the course will use a variety of material documents as materials.
