I have been interested in overseas countries since I was a child, and I chose GSC because I wanted to study various fields in English at university. Most of the classes are small, so there are many discussions with the whole class, which not only helped me to become more proactive, but also broadened my horizons by listening to other people's views during discussions and presentations. In addition, the English classes taught me how to write academic papers and give presentations, which was useful for deepening my knowledge of my major when I study abroad. I would like to use the English skills and knowledge I have acquired in this environment over the past four years to support the lives of people around the world.

I chose to major in GS because I thought I would be able to improve my language skills and learn about various international issues. All GS classes are held face-to-face, with discussions in pairs or groups, and the close relationship between teachers and students is a distinctive feature and one of its attractions. To be honest, the spring semester of my first year was busy. But it was also fulfilling. In every class, the teachers gave me careful advice, teaching me a wide range of academic subjects rather than simple knowledge, such as how to write essays, how to find data, and how to study English, so that students could become more capable. I am really looking forward to the classes to come.

Hoping to play an active role as a global talent in the future, I chose the Global Studies Course (GSC), where classes are mainly conducted in English. I struggled with taking classes mainly in English when I was not confident in my English ability, but I overcame it by remembering to be proactive in communicating and by receiving corrections from my teachers and undergoing thorough training in how to write English essays. Through four years of study, I was able to acquire not only communication skills in English, but also logical thinking and cooperation through discussions and group work. I would like to use the English ability and communication skills I have cultivated here to play a role in connecting Japan and the world in the future.

I studied abroad as a high school student and chose this department because I wanted to learn more using English. I can study a wide variety of subjects, from literature to international issues, and can earn the credits needed to graduate by taking classes in English alone. A feature of this department is that there are many presentations and group discussions, and some classes are student-led, so I was able to acquire the ability to accurately express my opinions in English. I was originally good at speaking English, but my vocabulary improved dramatically by submitting reports in class and reading literature. I feel that the knowledge and critical thinking skills I gained through English, and the growth I have gained to the point where I can debate on an equal footing with international students, will definitely be useful to me even after I enter the workforce.

* Faculty of Humanities English Program GSC will transition to Global Studies Program the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences Department of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 2022.
