Foreign Language Courses Courses
Required foreign language (English)
In addition to honing your English communication skills, which are essential for thriving in a global society, we also place emphasis on acquiring English for academic purposes, which is necessary for studying and researching in specialized fields, such as reading English literature and writing papers in English.
First-year English classes are divided into levels based on the results of a placement test administered by all faculties prior to enrollment, and students progress through their studies according to their level. In addition, university-wide exams are held in the fall semesters of the first and second years to ensure that students' English skills continue to improve.
Foreign Language Selection
In addition to the compulsory and elective Foreign Language Courses for each faculty, department, and major, students can choose from eight elective foreign languages (English, German, French, Chinese, Korean, Korean, Spanish, Italian, and Russian) that are offered to all faculties. Classes range from introductory courses to on-site training, so students can study the foreign language they are interested in regardless of faculty, department, or year.
Key points for taking this course
Faculty of Economics / Faculty of Sociology
Through the study of Foreign Language Courses, we place emphasis on learning about different cultures and cultivating foreign language proficiency. "Required Foreign Language (English)" classes are held in small classes based on student achievement level. In the first year, students hone the four English skills in "General" and "Conversation" classes, steadily building a foundation. In the second year, in addition to "Conversation," "Media," and "Basic Grammar," there are also classes aimed at improving TOEIC® scores, allowing students to choose and acquire the skills they need. In addition, GDS in the School of Faculty of Sociology offers a six-week overseas English training program in the first year.
Faculty of Humanities
Since we study a variety of regions, it is important to overcome language barriers. Therefore, we offer Foreign Language Courses necessary for the study of each department, mainly in the first and second years. Students acquire the foreign language skills to express their own thoughts. For English in particular, each department has a "Basic Department Class" and an "English Intensive Class" aimed at acquiring more advanced English skills.
| Department of British and American Studies |
English classes are divided into reading, writing, and speaking/listening classes with the aim of improving the four language skills. In particular, in the "English Intensive Class," all compulsory English and Specialized Courses are taught in English. In addition, to promote multilingual and multicultural learning, German, French, and Spanish are also available as elective foreign languages.

The "Basic English Classes" for English majors are "General English" classes where students will acquire English language skills. The "Intensive English Classes" are joint classes for two departments, where students will train the four language skills and also take part in workshop classes, aiming to acquire even higher levels of English language skills. In addition, we have placed elective foreign language subjects so that students can study languages related to the specialized fields of each department.

School of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Education at School of Liberal Arts and Sciences is centered on classes in English. For this reason, Foreign Language Courses are considered a foundation for taking classes, and small-group English classes are required in the first and second years. Students are thoroughly trained to improve their academic English skills across all four language skills. In addition, the EM major implements an intensive IELTS TM training program during English training in the first year, and the GS major conducts IELTS TM preparation practice once a week. Each major prepares a curriculum aimed at improving English proficiency.
