Department of European Studies

Key Points of the Department

POINT1

One of the few departments nationwide that focuses on learning about "Europe"

The curriculum is centered on Germany and France, but also covers Europe as a whole. Through lectures that respond to the wide range of interests of students and four years of intensive small-group study in seminars, students will gain a deeper understanding of various aspects of Europe.

POINT 2

Approaching Europe from multiple angles and perspectives

Research areas include language and literature, art and life, history and thought, and environment and society, and students study in courses that fit their interests. By using their simple interests as a driving force in their studies to discover the various facets of Europe and pursuing them in seminars, students will acquire a broad perspective and a deep education.

POINT3

The primary foreign languages are German and French. English intensive classes are also available.

In the department's basic classes, students mainly study either German or French (4 classes in the first year, 3 classes in the second year). In addition, 1 class of English is compulsory in the first year, and in the second year, students can choose Italian, German, or French (2 classes) if they did not choose the language in the first year. In addition, there is a selective English intensive class where students can hone their English skills while studying German or French, and 2 classes of German or French and 3 classes of English are compulsory in both the first and second years.
