Messages from students who have realized their growth

We asked students about the appeal of the interdisciplinary seminar

I realized the changes in myself by being in an environment that required initiative.

Q. Please tell us if you have noticed any changes or growth within yourself as a result of the inter-departmental seminar.

During the activities, the participants learned a lot by coming into contact with the ideas of various people and at the same time facing their peers and themselves. The change in their awareness of "learning from others" and "knowing others" had a major impact on two actions.
One was during my job search. I actively visited alumni and learned specific perspectives and anecdotes that only those who actually work in the industry could have. This broadened my perspective and way of thinking. I was able to ask without hesitation about not only the good points of the industry, but also the difficult points, which not only helped me prepare for the selection process, but also helped to alleviate any anxieties or gaps I had after receiving a job offer.
The second reason was that I went to the UK in the summer of my fourth year using the Musashi University Scholarship for Overseas Field Research Program. By interacting with people and learning about their thoughts in an interdisciplinary seminar, I realized how narrow my own perspective was, and I wanted to learn more about people and cultures overseas. I feel that this experience also helped me grow as a person.

Q. Please tell us what you did to balance your studies with other classes, part-time jobs, job hunting, etc.

I had no problem balancing my studies with other classes because I had worked hard to earn credits in my first and second years. However, because I took the course in the fall semester of my third year, it was difficult to balance it with job hunting. In order to balance my job hunting and the inter-departmental seminar, I made sure to find ways to do both.
First, in my job search, I narrowed down the industries I would apply to and the time period in which I would take internship selection. By narrowing down my industry selection in depth rather than broadly and shallowly, I narrowed the scope of my thoughts and saved time on preparing for interviews and filling out application forms. I tried to balance my activities and not neglect one or do both half-heartedly. I also made an effort to build trusting relationships with my fellow members on a daily basis, so that no distrust would arise if I had to leave the inter-departmental seminar activities midway to look for a job.

Q. How did your experience in this seminar influence your job hunting and future career path?

Companies operate as an organization, so they place great importance on teamwork when filling out application forms and during interviews. Most companies were very interested in my experience in the interdisciplinary seminar, where I worked in a team in collaboration with actual companies. Furthermore, the growth I gained from the interdisciplinary seminar experience had a positive impact on my communication style, posture, and confidence during interviews, allowing me to conduct my job search without any regrets.
While researching corporate social responsibility and the SDGs as part of an assignment in an inter-departmental seminar, I became interested in these initiatives and wanted to be involved in a business that could have some kind of impact on sustainability. This led me to decide to work for a company that promotes contributing to these issues as part of its business operations.
