We asked students about the appeal of the interdisciplinary seminar
The benefit was that I gained a more accurate understanding of myself.

Q. What were your expectations and concerns regarding taking the course?
There were two things I was hoping for.
The first is to meet members with whom I can freely express my opinions. I felt that discussion was important in the activities of the inter-departmental seminar, so I wanted to become friends with people with whom I could freely express my opinions.
The second reason is the opportunity to interact with companies. As a student, there are not many opportunities to talk with people from actual companies. I hoped that this would be a good experience for my future job hunting.
On the other hand, I was worried about whether I would be able to work well as part of a team. Before taking the course, I often worked alone and didn't have much experience working in a team. I was worried about not knowing how to build relationships with my team members.

Q. Were there any differences between the inter-departmental seminar and the seminars and lectures you have taken up until now?
A distinctive feature of this seminar is that nothing gets done unless students take the initiative, because everyone involved is in a horizontal relationship.
For example, the instructor will not say, "Look into this." The instructors are also in a horizontal relationship, and all students will find and share questions and solutions.
In interdisciplinary seminar discussions, students first listen to the opinions of others and then communicate their own thoughts to those around them. This entire process cannot be achieved unless students take the initiative.
I think what is unique about this seminar is that students take the initiative and move forward while gaining mutual understanding of the different ideas of students from other departments.

Q. What was the best thing about taking the inter-departmental seminar?
I have gained a more accurate understanding of myself. There are two specific reasons for this.
The first thing was that I was able to discover my own strengths and weaknesses. I was good at leading discussions, but I was not good at coming up with ideas that would excite those around me, and I realized that I lacked flexible thinking. I'm not good at creating something from nothing, but I realized for the first time that I enjoy and am good at putting things together from one to ten.
Secondly, I realized that combining individual abilities leads to great results. Until now, I have often worked alone, and I often thought, "I can do anything on my own." However, in the interdisciplinary seminar, I was given tasks that I absolutely could not accomplish on my own. It is by working as a team that great results can be achieved, and I was able to work while thinking about how I could utilize my strengths to achieve this.
This experience has had a positive impact on my subsequent activities, such as undergraduate seminars and internships.
