Graduate Graduate School of Economics Completion Requirements

Master's Program

According to the Graduate School University Regulations, students must be enrolled for at least two years, earn a total of 30 or more credits, and pass the examination of their dissertation (master's thesis or research paper). However, research papers can be used as dissertations only in the Advanced Professional Course. Completion requirements for each course/program are set out separately.

Doctoral Program

According to the Doctral Program School University Regulations, the requirements for completing the doctoral program are to be enrolled for at least three years, to earn a total of 20 or more credits from courses in the Graduate Graduate School of Economics Doctral Program, and to pass the thesis (doctoral dissertation) examination. Doctral Program courses consist of two types of courses: specialized research, which serves as an advanced seminar in a specialized field, and thesis guidance, which is a course for preparing a doctoral thesis. For thesis guidance, students must take courses each year assigned by their supervisor and earn a total of 12 or more credits. Additionally, students must earn at least eight credits from courses in Doctral Program Graduate School of Economics designated by their supervisor.

Graduate Graduate School of Humanities Completion Requirements

Master's Program

European and American Studies Major

  1. Students must be enrolled for at least two years. However, students enrolled for a long period of time must be enrolled for the standard period of study (3 or 4 years). Students eligible for the "Early Completion System" will be required to enroll in one year.
  2. Students must earn a total of 30 credits or more, of which 20 credits or more must be from subjects in European and American Studies Major European and American Studies Major, and 16 credits must be from subjects taught or recommended by the supervising professor.
  3. Examination of Dissertation (Specialized Research Course) After the fiscal year in which the dissertation submission qualifications are met, students must complete a total of 4 credits: "Seminar in Western Cultural Studies 1" and "Seminar in Western Studies 2" in charge of their supervisor in their major (in principle, consecutive spring and fall semesters). In addition, students must pass the examination of their dissertation in the semester of "Seminar in Western Cultural Studies 2".
  4. Special Topic Research Examination (Career Advancement Course, Lifelong Learning Course) Students must earn credits for a seminar course taught by their supervising professor in the year in which the Special Topic Research is prepared and pass the Special Topic Research examination.

Japanese Studies Major

  1. Students must be enrolled for at least two years. However, students enrolled for a long period of time must be enrolled for the standard period of study (3 or 4 years). Students eligible for the "Early Completion System" will be required to enroll in one year.
  2. Students must earn a total of 30 credits or more, of which 20 credits or more must be from subjects in Japanese Studies Major, and 16 credits must be from subjects in Japanese Studies Major taught or directed by the supervising professor.
  3. Examination of Dissertation (Specialized Research Course) After the year in which the dissertation submission qualifications are met, students must have completed a total of 4 credits of "Seminar in Japanese Culture 1" and "Seminar in Japanese Culture Studies 2" in charge of their supervisor in their major (in principle, consecutive spring and fall semesters). In addition, students must pass the examination of their dissertation in the semester of "Seminar in Japanese Culture Studies 2".
  4. Special Topic Research Examination (Career Advancement Course, Lifelong Learning Course) Students must earn credits for a seminar course taught by their supervising professor in the year in which the Special Topic Research is prepared and pass the Special Topic Research examination.

Sociology Program

  1. Students must be enrolled for at least two years. However, students enrolled for a long period of time must be enrolled for the standard period of study (3 or 4 years). Students eligible for the "Early Completion System" will be required to enroll in one year.
  2. Earn a total of 30 credits or more. Of these, 20 credits or more shall be acquired from Sociology Program courses, and 16 credits shall be compulsory in the subjects in charge or supervised by the supervisor of Sociology Program courses.
  3. Examination of Dissertation (Specialized Research Course) After the year in which the dissertation submission qualifications are met, students must have completed a total of 4 credits of "Sociology Research Supervision Seminar 1" and "Sociology Research Supervisory Seminar 2" in charge of their supervisor in their major (in principle, consecutive spring and fall semesters). In addition, students must pass the examination of their dissertation in the semester of "Sociological Research Supervision Seminar 2".
  4. Special Topic Research Examination (Career Advancement Course, Lifelong Learning Course) Students must earn credits for a seminar course taught by their supervising professor in the year in which the Special Topic Research is prepared and pass the Special Topic Research examination.

Doctoral Program

Doctral Program for at least three years, earn a total of 12 or more credits by taking "special seminars" taught by their supervising professor, receive research guidance from their supervising professor, and pass the thesis examination.
