About Musashi University Sustainable Society and Economy Research Group
With worsening global environmental problems such as climate change, and unresolved poverty and disparity issues, discussions are continuing on how to achieve sustainability of society and the economy as a whole around the world. With the realization of the SDGs advocated by the United Nations and sustainability becoming a major global theme, many economic entities, including national governments, local governments, and companies, are being asked to take concrete measures and actions to achieve a sustainable society and economy. However, because the goals set out in the SDGs are diverse, there are many cases in which the solutions to achieve a certain type of sustainability constrain the achievement of other goals, resulting in a trade-off relationship between the achievement of each goal. As a result, many studies and actual cases have already shown that the actions of some regions and economic entities to form a sustainable society have an effect that reduces the sustainability of society and the economy as a whole around the world. In order to achieve true sustainability, multifaceted and multi-layered analysis must be conducted to clarify the complex effects of how the efforts of each economic entity toward sustainability affect the sustainability of other economic entities and society as a whole.
Currently, policy proposals for a sustainable society are being made in various fields across the social sciences, including economics and political science, but it must be said that integrated research activities that fully understand the interactions and relationships between each proposed policy are still insufficient. In order to realize a truly sustainable society, society demands more comprehensive research that combines a multifaceted analytical perspective based on international research activities with interdisciplinary research knowledge. For this reason, this research group was established with the aim of generating discussions that transcend academic fields and accelerating international research collaboration in order to realize a society and economy that guarantees sustainability.
