Diploma Policy
Based on the "The Three Founding Principles" of the school's founding and the "Basic Goals of Education" of the university, European and American Studies Major, Japanese Studies Major, and Sociology Major, our educational and research objectives are to provide students with advanced Specialized Knowledge knowledge and research skills in their respective fields of study, and to cultivate interdisciplinary knowledge that crosses related fields. Furthermore, the objective of human resource development is to nurture researchers who are active in educational and research institutions with outstanding academic knowledge in Japan and abroad, and to nurture professionals who can contribute to the inheritance and creation of culture and the development of society.
European and American Studies Major
The educational and research objectives of Master's Program are to provide students with academic research skills in the fields of European and American languages, literature, history, thought, art, and comparative culture, and to cultivate the knowledge and ability to work in highly specialized professions, while Doctral Program is to train personnel with advanced academic knowledge and leadership skills who can assume professional positions at institutions of higher education and contribute to the inheritance and development of culture. The purpose of education and research is to develop human resources with advanced knowledge and leadership skills who can contribute to the inheritance and development of culture.
Japanese Studies Major
The educational and research objectives of Master's Program are to develop academic research skills in the areas of Japanese language, literature, history, thought, art, folklore, performing arts, and East Asian culture, and to cultivate the knowledge and ability to work in highly specialized professions, while Doctral Program is to train personnel with advanced academic knowledge and leadership skills who can assume professional positions at institutions of higher education and contribute to cultural transmission and creation. The purpose of education and research is to nurture human resources with advanced knowledge and leadership skills who can contribute to the inheritance and creation of culture.
Sociology Major
The education and research objectives of the program are to develop academic research and investigation capabilities in the fields of sociological theories, sociological methodology, media studies, and cultural anthropology in Master's Program, and to cultivate talented individuals who will take on Doctral Program positions in the research departments of higher education institutions and companies, and who have the advanced academic knowledge to contribute to the discovery and resolution of various social problems, as well as the leadership skills to contribute to the development of society and culture in the Doctoral program.
Master's Program
In principle, students who have enrolled in this course for at least two years (four semesters), acquired the required credits (30 credits), received research guidance, submitted a master's thesis or a specific research topic, passed the examination, and acquired the abilities and qualities required by each major will be awarded a master's degree. In addition, in this course, students with excellent grades who meet certain conditions can apply for an early completion system and complete the course in one year (two semesters).
European and American Studies Major
A Master's degree in Humanities will be awarded to those who have cultivated the following targeted abilities and qualities in the three courses:
(1) Specialized Research Course
- Advanced Specialized Knowledge in the humanities in the fields of European and American languages, literature, history, thought, art, and comparative cultural studies
- Ability to conduct research as an independent researcher in the humanities
- Analytical ability and inquisitiveness to elucidate the theme that one has set for themselves within their respective specialized research fields
- Advanced language skills
- Ability to organize, write, and debate when publishing results
- The ability to take an interest in various social issues, utilize advanced knowledge, and proactively work to solve problems through dialogue or collaboration with others
(2) Career Advancement Course
- Specialized Knowledge in various fields such as majors, teachers (junior and senior high schools), curators, etc.
- Practical techniques in each field, specialized research and analysis methods

A doctoral degree will be awarded to students who have studied in this program for at least three years (six semesters), received the required research guidance, submitted a doctoral thesis, passed the thesis review and final examination, and acquired the abilities and qualities required by each department.
European and American Studies Major
A Doctor of Humanities degree will be awarded to those who have acquired the abilities and qualities listed below.
- Exceptional specialized knowledge in the fields of European and American language, literature, history, thought, art, and comparative cultural studies, appropriate for a researcher or highly specialized professional in the humanities.

Japanese Studies Major

A PhD in Sociology will be awarded to those who have acquired the abilities and qualities listed below.
- Exceptional specialized knowledge in the fields of sociological theories, sociological methodology, media studies, and cultural anthropology, appropriate for a researcher or highly specialized professional in the field of sociology.
- Ability to carry out original, autonomous, and advanced research activities in a specialized research field
- Ability to acquire advanced analysis, research methods, and investigation techniques related to research themes, and to draw original conclusions and make proposals.
- The ability to communicate and express research results to the academic and educational communities, and to society at large

Curriculum Policy
Based on the "The Three Founding Principles" on which the school was founded, as well as the university's basic educational goals and Diploma Policy, the Graduate School will organize and implement its educational curriculum in accordance with the following guidelines.
Master's Program
Master's Program The Department of Humanities and Sociology consists of three majors: European and American Studies Major, Japanese Studies Major, and Sociology Major. Each major offers a specialized research course, a career development course, and a lifelong learning course. The curriculum is designed to cultivate advanced specialized knowledge in various fields of humanities and sociology, research and investigation skills, language skills, and the ability to structure and express the results of research and publication. For students who anticipate difficulty in completing the first semester in two years, the program offers a long-term enrollment system that allows students to take courses over a three- or four-year period.
European and American Studies Major
- In order to enable students to acquire advanced specialized knowledge and research skills in the fields of European and American languages, literature, history, thought, art, and comparative cultural studies, Specialized Courses such as "Research," "Special Lectures," "Literature Study" (all lectures), and "Specialized Seminars" are systematically arranged.
- In terms of research guidance, a supervisor is appointed to help each student acquire the specialized knowledge, analytical skills, and methods necessary to solve the theme that they have set, and guidance is provided based on a research guidance plan that the supervisor issues to each student.
- In the year in which a master's thesis or specific research topic is prepared, students in the Specialized Research Course must earn credits for a "Research Supervision Seminar" taught by their supervising professor, and students in the Career Advancement Course and Lifelong Learning Course must earn credits for a "Specialized Seminar" taught by their supervising professor.
- For master's theses or specific research projects, a review committee consisting of three or more faculty members will, in principle, review and evaluate the degree of acquisition of specialized knowledge, organizational ability, writing ability, and communication ability, etc., and in the final examination, the review committee will review and evaluate the student's debate ability, communication ability, etc.
- Regarding independence and ability to collaborate, etc., we will grasp them through presentations of research results, etc.

Master's Program
The basic conditions for admission are that students understand the "The Three Founding Principles" on which our school was founded and the "Basic Educational Goals" of the entire university; that their research subjects are in the major fields acquired in the bachelor's degree program, namely language, literature, history, thought, art, folklore, comparative cultural studies, sociological theory, sociological methodology, various areas of sociology and related fields; that they have acquired the broad-based knowledge and deep culture acquired in the bachelor's degree program, and that they have acquired sufficient specialized knowledge, foreign language literature reading comprehension, linguistic ability, and theoretical analytical ability to study in this graduate school; that they also have the motivation to independently engage in research and contribute to society.
European and American Studies Major
Those who wish to theoretically and practically study Western culture, particularly in English-speaking, German-speaking, and French-speaking countries, and comparative cultural studies. In addition to the ability to read and understand foreign languages, primarily English, German, or French, those who have the logical thinking and linguistic skills to investigate and analyze various cultural phenomena from their own perspective, and who possess specialized knowledge at the level of completing a bachelor's degree.
Japanese Studies Major
Students who have a strong interest in cultural studies of Japan and other East Asian regions, and who have the basic knowledge, literature comprehension, and language skills necessary to carry out academic research.Furthermore, students who have the ability to analyze materials related to their major, logical thinking, and express themselves, and who can actively and independently pursue a theme that they have set based on a problem they have discovered themselves, while also considering comparative research between Japan and other East Asian regions.
Sociology Major
Those who have general education, the ability to read and understand foreign language literature, and linguistic proficiency, as well as specialized knowledge of sociology and media studies at the bachelor's degree level, theoretical analytical ability, data analysis ability, and sociological thinking ability. Furthermore, those who can theoretically and empirically analyze various social and cultural phenomena and actively and independently engage in research on a theme they have set themselves from their own perspective.

Sociology Major
Those who have general education, the ability to read and understand foreign language literature, and language skills, as well as specialist knowledge of sociology and media studies at a level equivalent to completing a master's degree course, theoretical analysis skills, data analysis skills, and sociological thinking skills. Furthermore, those who can independently and proactively tackle the writing of a dissertation on a research topic that they have set themselves from their own unique perspective with a good plan.
