The Faculty of Humanities Coaching Program is a course that targets students who are highly-motivated, willing to work intensively on their English and broader academic skills, and who possess a vision toward the future for themselves as members of the global society.

Students have been enjoying intensive weekly sessions that focus on building skills in academic English as well as providing them with time to collaborate on projects in small research groups. They are encouraged to choose topics that will take them outside of the university campus and that allow them to follow their own interests. Topics that students are currently working on together include:

“Preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics” – Students are interested in learning about how Tokyo is preparing to host the upcoming 2020 Olympics. They are especially focusing on what types of efforts are being made toward providing hospitality to international visitors.

“Experiences of Indian immigrants in Japan” – Students have developed a plan to learn more about the experiences and culture of some of the roughly 23,000 Indian immigrants who live in Japan, focusing on the communities surrounding some restaurants in the Ekoda area.

“Hello Kitty: Explaining the global appeal of a piece of Japanese culture” – The focus of this group is the popular Kitty-chan character. They plan to trace the history and development of this character, and to try to explain how its popularity has spread outside of Japan.

In their groups, students gather information and plan fieldwork outings through which they obtain information and experiences that enable them to add depth and relevance to the report and presentation they will give at the end of the program.

In order to maintain strong connections between the students and the coaches in the program, we encourage social interaction that extends outside the classroom. Not only are students expected to schedule regular one-on-one counseling sessions with a program coach to discuss their personal progress, but we also take advantage of various technologies such as Line SNS messaging and an online content management system to ensure that students are able to contact coaches or their peers when they have questions, want to share information, or require feedback.

Additionally, occasional social gatherings, where the atmosphere is less academic, provide for excellent opportunities to share opinions and practice communication and interpersonal skills in English!
