Overview
In the history of Japan-Korea relations, research on "pro-Japanese" groups in colonial Korea has been difficult to advance academically due to the political and social situation in Korea after World War II. Alan Ellie Bae is conducting historical research in Japan and abroad to fill this gap. This meeting will focus on the intellectual Helen Kim. During the colonial period, she graduated from Ewha University (now Ewha Womans University). She studied in the United States, earning a PhD in Education at Ohio Wesleyan University, Boston University, and Columbia University. After returning to Japan, she became involved in the movement for the expansion of women's rights. A Methodist Christian, she utilized her international network of contacts, linking East and West. After returning to Korea, Helen Kim became principal of her alma mater, and after the school became a university after the war, she also served as president. However, she was severely criticized for being a pro-Japanese collaborator during the colonial period, and there has even been a movement to remove her statue from campus. At this meeting, the presenter will explore her thoughts and actions during the colonial period and shed light on the reality of her pro-Japanese stance, including a gender history perspective.
