With the rapid spread of AI, the development of the VR environment, the Internet that has become the leading role of media, and the progress of the information society, our society is entering a period of restructuring and restructuring. How should we design a virtual space that will become a new living space for us in the real world? In this major, we aim not to learn that has a correct answer, but to learn to ask questions and create solutions on our own.
POINT 1
"Real Society" and
Between "virtual spaces"
Thinking about how to live
We are not necessarily living only in the "real society" now. The internet, social media, and the VR space. We live across various societies and spaces, both real and virtual. In such a situation, it is necessary to "update" all kinds of ideas such as existing ways of thinking about society, norms, legal systems, and ethics. In this major, students will consider how society itself can be designed and how to live based on the concept of sociology.
POINT 2
Networks and AI,
What information technology brings to society
Consider the impact
The technology of networking and the rapid development of AI are changing our society itself. What kind of society needs to be designed using new technology? In order to design change rather than chasing change, we will thoroughly learn about the relationship between the latest technology and society.
POINT 3
Data analysis and
Learn programming
Gaining the Power to Change Society
In order to design your own society in modern society, you need data analysis techniques and programming skills. What kind of data do you need to know what you want to know, how do you analyze it, and what kind of programming skills do you need to do so? I will actually move my hands and make it my own strength.
In theory and methods courses, students acquire the basics of sociology and how to handle data, while in advanced courses, students learn practical data utilization methods from various perspectives.
DESIGN
Designing the information society.
Designing society with information
Rapidly evolving digital technologies and AI are transforming the very nature of society and transforming the very concept of society. Learn how information is transforming society and how to design and build an information-based society, all from the perspective of the latest technological trends and visionaries.
DIGITAL
Proficient in programming languages such as R and Python
Programming languages and AI are important tools in the information society as well as communication tools. To master digital tools, interacting with computers is essential. Tools like Python, R for statistical analysis. We will learn the language to make your computer your companion.
DATA
Mastering data analysis,
Diverse Data Representation
There are various methods of data analysis. Sometimes you can easily analyze using web tools, while other times you can use languages like R for detailed analysis. Data can be numbers or words. We aim to be experts who independently chart their own analysis paths for any data and express the results in diverse ways.

Frequently asked questions will be answered by Deans Faculty of Sociology and School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Faculty of Sociology
It's the ability to explain vague ideas based on clear evidence. Don't people talk about various events in society with a vague impression? Rather than relying on assumptions or impressions, data science is a way to logically explain why events occur and what mechanisms are hidden behind them. By using data science, you can not only analyze current events but also predict what will happen in the future and what should be done for a desirable future.
School of Liberal Arts and Sciences
I believe data science is a discipline that extracts valuable information from data to aid decision-making and problem-solving. Specifically, I think it's fair to think of it as a combination of mathematics, statistics, programming, and AI (machine learning).
Faculty of Sociology
Because you're a humanities major, you have to learn this. In fields previously addressed by humanities disciplines—such as social issues, corporate challenges, and human relations issues—opinions from influential and influential individuals have been trusted and respected. However, was there really any basis or logical explanation for that? Data science provides the foundation through the power of data analysis. Opinions are respected not because of "who" said it, but based on the reliability of the data and the credibility of the analysis. Such a society is needed right now. Precisely because we are humanities majors, we are in an era where data science is essential.
School of Liberal Arts and Sciences
First of all, I think it's better to stop dividing between humanities and science tracks. In humanities research, there are also studies called corporas, which use databases of language data to analyze vocabulary changes over time. I believe data science can be applied in any field and is becoming essential knowledge.
Faculty of Sociology
It is about facing real-world issues head-on. Learning data science methodologies is not the goal. It is crucial to interpret various social issues through the power of data science and to devise solutions. For that, no matter how much you delve into statistics and programming skills, there's no point in that. It is meaningless unless you simultaneously acquire the ability to understand real-world issues and problems, discover them, interpret them using data science methodologies, and present concrete explanations and solutions. That is precisely the value of studying data science at a humanities university.
School of Liberal Arts and Sciences
In School of Liberal Arts and Sciences Business Data Science Program, you will study how to apply this data science in the business field, so you will study not only mathematics, statistics, programming, and AI (machine learning), but also economics and business administration.
Faculty of Sociology
This is an end-to-end learning experience that only Musashi can do in the seminar. A key feature of data science learning at Musashi University is that you can work closely with faculty in small seminars, learning as if in a team. In real-world problem-solving, it is rare for companies, governments, and nonprofits to solve problems alone; teams analyze issues, clarify mechanisms, and create solutions. The meaning of learning at Musashi is that, together with the seminar's advisor and supporters, you can learn data science through the same process as solving real-world problems.
School of Liberal Arts and Sciences
In fact, the rapid development of AI in recent years has greatly enhanced the learning of data science itself. In other words, AI becomes a full-time tutor 24/7, supporting your studies. However, sometimes AI and students alone cannot proceed well. Therefore, in Musashi University with distinctive small-class classes and seminars, teachers act as your companions to support your learning. I think this is something Mammoth School can't do.
Furthermore, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences Business Data Science Program offers the opportunity to pursue a degree in the University of London's UoL BSc Data Science and Business Analytics through the Parallel Degree Program (PDP) with the University of London.
Faculty of Sociology
What matters is not math scores, but logical thinking skills. In the massive data processing known as big data, the ability to calculate by human hands is almost meaningless. What matters is understanding the way of thinking in mathematics and statistics (these two are actually similar but not different), not doing calculations with your own hands. Of course, if you scored well in math during high school, that's a good thing. However, if it's the result of rote memorization, it doesn't mean anything. Correctly understand what the formula means. This is the quality required in data science.
School of Liberal Arts and Sciences
The math level of Japanese high school students is truly high compared to the rest of the world. Even if you think you're bad at math, if you look at it on a global level, you're actually someone who can do it. I think it's enough to be able to do exercises from high school textbooks.
Faculty of Sociology
It's a foolish question. You don't study data science just to pursue a specific path. Data science is needed in every field of society. Data science is not tied to a specific profession but improves the quality and meaning of all kinds of work. If you study data science and start job hunting and are told, "Our company's industry has nothing to do with data science," it's better not to join such a company in the first place.
School of Liberal Arts and Sciences
I believe data science knowledge can be applied in any industry, and companies would want such talent so much that they would desperately seek it. Business Data Science Program of School of Liberal Arts and Sciences will teach in English. In addition to data science, you will also acquire knowledge of economics and business administration, as well as English proficiency, so I believe you can thrive at popular foreign consulting firms and IT firms today.
